The Next Chapter…

We’re sad to say that after 73 years of operating from Granville House, we are going to be moving to a brand new building. We understand that this news may come as a bit of a shock to our community, so we have created this page to explain why we’re moving, provide any relevant updates and information on how you can ask questions and get involved.

Why we’re moving:
The main reason for the move is simple – our current building is no longer fit for purpose. Our current corridors are very narrow, which can be difficult for wheelchair users passing by. The rooms are small and can feel quite crowded at times, as well as the maintenance costs which come with such an old building. Although the building is rich in heritage, it’s time we had an upgrade so that the people we support can truly thrive to their best abilities.

The new building:
The new building which has been acquired will have better wheelchair access with wider corridors, a built-in lift as opposed to just stairs, and will be more centrally located in Stockport to allow for better public transport access. It will also have on-site and secure parking facilities for staff, family members of the people we support and for our minibuses.

Please note that we don’t expect this move to happen anytime soon (we expect between 12-18 months away), and we will keep you well informed throughout the process.

Please find our FAQ’s section below, and if you have any questions around the move don’t hesitate to get in touch with us at: communications@supportability.org.uk

FAQ’S:

– Where will the new building be?
The new building will be on Higher Hillgate, Stockport.

– When will the move happen?
Although we don’t have an exact date for the move, we expect it happen in the next 12 to 18 months. There’s a lot of work that needs doing to transform the space and ensure it is fully equipped and ready for service.

-What will be different?
The new building will have gates to ensure for safe and secure access. There is a ramp access especially for wheelchair users, and a reception area where visitors will check-in to the building upon entry. It will also have a built-in lift for people to use to access other levels of the building. There will also be onsite parking facilities for staff and parents/carers of the people we support. Some additional features that our new building will have include accessible changing facilities and an independent living training flat. We also plan to create an open-plan office space for business support staff.

– Can the person I care for visit the building before the move?
Yes, we plan to arrange visits for anyone who is interested before the move. We understand how this may help some people with the transition, so will keep everyone informed on when these visits will be scheduled for.

– Can the person I care for have a say on what the building will be like?

Yes, we plan to run our Estates Forum Groups every 3 months, which will give those who attend our services at Granville House the chance to share their thoughts, opinions and/or concerns. These sessions will involve support staff, who can help people with communication aids if needed. In these sessions, we’ll talk about what the activity spaces will look like and discuss ways in which we will make the building welcoming, safe and easy to use. After each session, we will share notes and actions in Easy Read format.
